If you are looking for a creative environment where your gifts will be developed under the guidance of talented artists and dedicated teachers, where self-expression is encouraged and the limits of the imagination are fully challenged...this is the school for you.

Mission:

The purpose of the Department of Visual Arts is to provide the opportunity for students to develop to their fullest their potential as creative artists and future art educators. To this end, the department offers curricula, preparing students for careers in art in the studio areas of advertising design, ceramics, drawing, painting, photography and printmaking as well as for K-12 certification in art education.

For students majoring in other departments of the university, the Department of Visual Arts provides service courses and makes available to the campus and community at large such courses as art appreciation, art history, and studio courses which serve their particular needs and enrich their lives. The Department of Visual Arts further attempts to provide a source of cultural enrichment and leadership for the university and community through exhibitions, artist lecture series and artist workshops.

Prospective Students
At McNeese State University, you will not be a number or a face in the crowd. Studio art classes are kept small to ensure you receive the highest quality of instruction. The Visual Arts faculty are dedicated teachers as well as practicing professional artists in their studio areas. Degree Programs

Bachelor of Arts
in Art
with concentrations in the areas of ADVERTISING DESIGN, CERAMICS, DRAWING, PAINTING, PHOTOGRAPHY and PRINTMAKING

Bachelor of Arts in Art Education • certification for Teachers K-12

Associates of Arts Degree in General Studies • Concentration in Visual Art

Students may earn a minor in art by completing 30 hours of art courses approved
by the department head.
 

Abercrombie Gallery
The Abercrombie Gallery features a year-round exhibition series featuring faculty, students, visiting artists and The Annual McNeese National Works on Paper Exhibition.

Shearman Fine Arts Center
The Department of Visual Arts is housed within the Shearman Fine Arts Center. The Visual Arts Department together with the Department of Performing Arts composes the Institute of Fine and Performing Arts, designated as an “Area of Excellence” by the Louisiana Board of Regents.

Visiting Artists and Lecture Series
The Tuminello Lecture Series, Wade Wolfe Lecture Series , and McNeese Visiting Artist Series bring artists of national and international stature to the McNeese campus each semester to provide exhibitions, lectures and workshops for our students.

Study Abroad Programs
The Visual Arts Department offers Art and Art History courses in various locations both within and outside of the borders of the United States. Courses have been offered to include travel to the following locations:  Boston • New York • France • Italy • Greece

Freshman Art Scholarships
Art Scholarships are available to Freshman Art Majors.
Application should be made as early as possible during the senior year of High School.
An ACT score, a six semester high school transcript and admission packet are required.
Scholarship applicants will also need to submit a portfolio of their work consisting of ten examples created in any media. You may submit the actual works or send a slide or digital portfolio. Contact the Visual Arts Department for more information: 337-475-5060
